Sports journalists are reluctant to tackle faith on the field. (Sarah Pulliam Bailey, The Wall Street Journal)
The brother of Brett Favre said that the Vikings QB was battered in Sunday's loss to the Saints and that he does not think he's made a firm decision on whether to retire yet. Scott Favre told the Minneapolis Star Tribune that it's just too soon in the process for his 40-year-old brother to make a sound decision: "It's such a tough loss that if he made a decision right now it wouldn't be one with a clear mind I don't think. I think he needs to get away from it. As beat up as he was emotionally, physically, he couldn't make the right decision or a clear decision right then."
First off, let me make it clear that there is a reason covering the Vikings is so much fun. That's because there is an endless supply of speculation to keep a beat writer busy 12 months a year. Want evidence? Well, here it is. Three days after the Vikings' heart-breaking loss to New Orleans in the NFC Championship Game, there already is conjecture about what the franchise might do at quarterback. Yes, Brett Favre is signed for 2010 and all indications are the Vikings want him back, but what fun is actually waiting on a decision from him? Instead, the name being thrown out there as a possibility to replace Favre is longtime Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb. The reality is that just when you want to dismiss such talk you give it some thought and, well, you start to put together the pieces and ...
The Vikings committed five turnovers against the New Orleans Saints and blew a chance to go to the Super Bowl, but they could be the No. 1-ranked team in the NFL when the Las Vegas oddsmakers come out with the favorite to win next year's Super Bowl. The Vikings will be in much better shape than at the end of last season, when there wasn't any thought of Brett Favre being the team's quarterback and nobody knew how well rookies from the 2010 draft and other young players would develop.
Today would be the best day to say that I was right about you, that the killing interception you threw against the Saints justifies the Packers' decision to ditch you, justifies those, like me, who said this summer we had tired of your internal dramas and wished you would just stay home and mow. I'm still not sure why a quarterback of your experience would throw across his body, late in a play, late in a tied game, to a covered receiver. Those of us who predicted the return of Bad Brett late this season could seize on that moment to justify any criticism we want to level at you.
The corpse that was the Vikings' 2009 season hadn't even had time to become cold late Sunday night when the first report surfaced that Brett Favre had said he was "highly unlikely" to come back for another year. The information provided by ESPN promised to be the first of many Favre-related nuggets that emerge in the coming weeks and perhaps months as the quarterback ponders whether to return for a 20th NFL season and second with the Vikings. The most important thing is to take every report with a grain of salt.
Well, Brett Favre failed in his first attempt to bring the Vikings to the Super Bowl, when the team -- while completely outplaying the Saints -- lost on an overtime field goal 31-28 on Sunday night in New Orleans. It wasn't Favre's fault that the Vikings lost, although he was involved in a key interception that cost them a chance at a winning field-goal attempt at the end of regulation.
NEW ORLEANS - Fighting off tears that welled in his eyes and dealing with a sprained left ankle, Brett Favre stood at a podium inside the Superdome on Sunday night and made no promises about what the future may hold.
Brett Favre arrived in Minnesota five months ago, saying the only reason he had decided to end his second attempt at retirement was because he saw the opportunity to lead the Vikings to the Super Bowl. Favre is now two victories away from fulfilling that goal. "When I looked at this season and came in, I envisioned being in this situation," Favre said Wednesday, four days before the Vikings will play host to Dallas in an NFC divisional playoff game. "I didn't know who we would play, but I saw us in this moment and getting ready to play this game. Now I envisioned us winning and going on, but this feels right to me." Favre, who threw 21 touchdowns and only two interceptions in the Metrodome this season, is 12-10 as a starter in the playoffs but is 3-7 in his past 10 postseason appearances.
As a Packer, Brett Favre faced the Cowboys three times in the playoffs, with all three games at Dallas, and he lost all three. The games were Jan. 16, 1994, when the current Vikings quarterback completed 28 of 45 passes for 331 yards and two touchdowns for a 80.9 passer rating in a 27-17 defeat. On Jan. 8, 1995, Favre completed 18 of 35 passes for 211 yards, no TDs, one interception and a 58.2 rating in a 35-9 loss. On Jan. 14, 1996, Favre completed 21 of 39 for three touchdowns and two interceptions and a 84.0 rating in a 38-27 loss.
