Cardamom is a member of the ginger family. It is a highly fragrant spice, but once the tiny black cardamom seeds are removed from the thin papery husks, they tend to loose their flavour quickly, so I like to grind them myself if the recipe calls for ground cardamom [as in most baked goods].
You can find this in your grocery store spice department, but it won't be as fresh as if you buy it at an Asian food store that stocks and sells lots of herbs and spices. The other advantage of buying spices at an Asian market is the price - you can usually buy a large quantity for about the same price as a small bottle in a supermarket! Just repackage it in an airtight glass jar. Make sure you purchase the green variety unless your recipe states otherwise! NB Make sure your spices are fresh for maximum flavour - if it's been in your cupboard for so long you forgot it was there, it's ready for the bin! [ie: ready for the garbage!]
